Gourmet burgers

Food & Beverage Published on 18 October 2006 in Food & Beverage

Repeating our premise that everything can and will be upgraded, we bring you London's Gourmet Burger Kitchen – a rapidly growing chain of sit-down restaurants offering nothing but high-end burgers.

Winner of several ‘best burger’ and ‘best cheap eat’ awards, the idea behind the Gourmet Burger Kitchen is to take what was traditionally a non-healthy, fast-food favourite and turn it into something that's still a fast favourite, but made from fresh ingredients and presented as both nutritious and sophisticated.

Endorsed by internationally recognized chef Peter Gordon, GBK's menu features an extensive range of innovative and exotic burger combinations, some of which are likely to tempt even non-burger loving customers. On offer are classic combinations such as chicken, camembert and cranberry, and beef, avocado and bacon. Innovative alternatives include chorizo with sweet potato, and lamb with minted relish.

Although the idea of gourmet hamburgers is not entirely novel (the idea for GBK originated in New Zealand), it's one that definitely has room to spread across the world. Which city couldn't do with another fast, satisfyingly simply, yet fresh and nourishing choice?

Comments on this idea:

There's a great bar in Leeds, Oracle (www.oraclebar.com) that serves freshly cooked gourmet burgers - both meat and veggie options :)

In Canada, this has been a popular trend. Hero Certified Burgers and South Street Burger Co. in Toronto are examples.

If Im right, GBK stemmed from a burger store in Auckland (New Zealand) called Burger Wisconsin. Same same. Great burgers!!!.....If I was these guys, I would develop an organic range of burgers especially in the UK where the organic market is growing. Organic drinks as well would be nice to go with my burger.

Fanstastic idea. In Cape Town, South Africa we have two very similar offerings - Gourmet Burger and Royale. Don't know if the UK offering is any way related to the South African one. They serve the most divine lamb and blue cheese aioli.

Cape Town's Cafe Royale is phenomenal. Not only do they have all the different vegetarian options (more than I could even have imagined had I tried to put together a menu myself), they also have wheat-free buns.

And not nasty heavy rye-based buns, either - these look and taste like the wheat version...

Plus, all burgers are served with a novel combination of sweet potato chips, wedges, and normal potato chips.

They are popular in Australia as well. Check out Urban Burger (www.urbanburger.com.au)or Grill'd (www.grilld.com.au).

Talking about burgers, BadBoy Burgers in Richmond do THE most awesome burger EVER!! www.badboyburgers.com.au Definitely worth trying.

Have you tried Ground in Chiswick. Almost the same as GBK however they offer table service so you don't have to play McD's and go up and order at the counter. We had some awesome burgers at the weekend at Ground - although we have always been great fans of GBK - we will be going back to Ground just because we were made to feel so wellcome - plus they have Red Stripe on draft and some wicked apple pie!!

In Spain NH and Ferrán Adriá have developed a similar concept: Fast Good. www.fast-good.com

Agree with Pat. BAD BOY BURGERS in Richmond are THE BEST ON EARTH!!!!!

Good to see Bad Boy Burgers getting a mention. Look out world - the hot shots behind the wheel at Bad Boy in Richmond, Melbourne, are onto something! This has the potential for world domination, with high end, healthy burgers at a friendly price. Go BAD BOYS!

I was very sorry to hear that you do not indeed do home deliveries, as I am a Terminal Cancer patient and thus house bound as movement is painful. Other people like myself will never be able to taste your burgers, which is a great shame. If there is any way that you can reconsider doing deliveries I am sure that you will find that your sales WILL increase rapidly as people are also too lazy to go to the resataurant itself.
