Parties help guests sell their gold

Lifestyle & Leisure Published on 20 May 2008 in Lifestyle & Leisure

As the weakening economy causes purse strings to tighten in many parts of the world, consumers are increasingly looking for new ways to earn some extra money. Enter My Gold Party, which facilitates Tupperware-style parties that help guests sell their unused trinkets, cashing in on record gold prices.

Launched earlier this year, My Gold Party sells all the equipment minipreneurs need to host parties in which guests can sell their gold, including a scale, karat tester and book of instructions. Party hosts then invite guests to bring gold coins, watches and jewelry to their party, where they assay and weigh each item to determine its current market worth. The party host pays guests for the items with cash or a cheque, then ships the gold to a refinery, which in turn pays the host—at a rate the host hopes will be higher than paid to the party guests. The gold is then melted down and reused. My Gold Party's kit for hosts is priced at USD 699.50. (Obviously, scales and karat testers can also be bought from many other suppliers.)

Consumers in hard times have always been able to sell their spare jewelry in pawn shops, but by bringing the process out of the back alley and into the living room, My Gold Party legitimises and updates it with a social and entrepreneurial twist. As the saying goes, there's gold in them thar hills—both for the consumers who have it and for the minipreneurs who help them sell it. One to bring to cash-strapped hills near you?

Comments on this idea:

Earn the absolute top dollar for your scrap jewelry; by hosting a home; office, hospital, or church gold party. We will pay you and your guest's cash for all precious metals!! All you have to do is bring everyone together in one place for 2-3 hours with their scrap, unwanted, and broken jewelry. We will come to you and professionally test and weigh all the metals right in front of you while you wait. We will also show break down what we pay you and why. Also, if you mention you saw this ad you will receive 5% of the total from anyone of your guest's parties that book off of yours. NEVER GET HUSTLED AGAIN BY ANTOHER LYING JEWELRY STORE, OR PAWN SHOP! http://www.goldpartying.com or: 248-302-3474 we are the refinery, no one pays higher than us, period!!!

This is a very creative idea. Until now I was only aware of online gold buyers, such as http://www.YourGold.com. Buying gold at parties seems like an interesting spin on an already great business concept.

I too had a couple parties like this in my neighborhood and I was very skeptical. I feel like since they are not the refiner themselves, they end up being the middleman (hence taking middleman rakes). Selling gold online is very easy and if you find a site that IS the refiner, then you get more bang for your buck. I used a site called Gold Pawn Shop and my experience was great! Their site is www.goldpawnshop.com

Good luck!

I took two 10k necklaces to another retailer this morning at 10:00 a.m. before my Gold Party at 2:00 pm. and was told that the necklaces were 10K gold that weighed 25.99 grams and was offered $133.40.I asked Paul how much was he paying at my party for gold per gram and he indicated $7 for 10K, $10 for 14K, $13 for 18k, and $20 for 21k. I knew the two necklaces that I had been offered $133.40 would earn me at my own party $181.93. I know that my guest and I were underpaid and he walked in the door intentionally to deceive and misrepresent the terms of the verbal contract we had made.

I use www.mygoldsold.co.uk they have great service and fast payment.
