Last year, we featured Passout Marketing, an Australian start-up that focuses on a previously unused piece of advertising real estate: passout stamps, the stamps that are inked on customers' hands to show they've paid admission for a club, or are of legal drinking age.

Prompted by our recent post on skinvertising, Colin de Vries of Handvertising emailed to inform us that he's brought advertising on passout stamps to the Netherlands. (To our intense dismay, he hadn't spotted the concept on Springwise.) As we mentioned in our post about Passout Marketing, it's a relatively easy business to set up, once you've a) secured a network of venues willing to participate and b) found advertisers interested in reaching late-night revellers.

So far, over 20 venues have joined Handvertising's network, and the fledgling company is in talks with advertisers. Handvertising pointed out one opportunity we hadn't considered: with smoking bans coming into place in the Netherlands next year, every nicotine addict will want their hand stamped to go out for a smoke and be allowed back into a club. Check your local hotspots this week—if no-one's advertising on passout stamps yet, make your move ;-)

Comments on this idea:

Seems like a great idea. What do you think Handvertising charges advertisers to be featured on his stamp?

if someone tried to stamp a brand on me, I would be seriously pi**ed off.

Hello Patrick and Dan,

I'm the owner of Handvertising. I'll try to answer your questions and remarks.

Patrick, The costs are very reasonable. It consists of a fee per expected visitor. The stamps use special quick-dry (to prevent stains on clothing) and easy removable ink.

Dan, normally you would get a star, circle or any other shape on your hand. I agree that just a logo is not really attractive. That's why I encourage the advertisers to be more creative with the stamp. E.g. a discount at the counter if you show the stamp. Or a 2 for 1 action. Or a grand price if you text the number on the stamp, or just a really funny stamp. I would expect that if you have serious issues with the concept that the doorman is willing to use a regular stamp. I hope this clears things up.

Kind regards,

Colin de Vries

I love this idea!

Please send some more information as I am definately interested!!!

Hi

How long does it last - can it be easily removed?

Lynne

Hello Bret,

Yes! amongst other countries US is one of them.

Hello Patrick,

Tnx.

Hello Jamal,

Please send me you contact details at Colinhandvertising.com

Hello Lynne,

The stamp lasts a whole day and can be removed using regular water and soap.

English version of the site will be up and running soon. Send me a email if you want to be notified.

Thank you all, my mail box almost exploded due to the positive reactions from all over the world.

Two questions:

What is the benefit to the venue that decides to use the ad stamps?

If the venue uses wrist-bands can the same concept be used? Placing the ad on the bands.

Hi,

1 The venue receives money for using the stamps.
2 Wristbands are 1 cm wide. The stamps are 4 x 4 cm. So, yes, you could use wristbands but space is limited and long words will wrap around your wrist rendering the text unreadable.

Colin

hello
this passport stamp sounds like a good idea, so can you send any more info on it?

Colin hi,

My name is Andy and I set up my company 'unique advertising' here in Ireland 8 months ago, the advertising hand stamp has taken off really well for us with 25 pubs and clubs between Dublin and Galway City on board.
We are in talks with one or two more companies that wish to advertising with us, the question I have for you is how do you find or source out companies for new business?

Kind Regards,
Andy.

Dear Colin,

First of all congratulations for such a wonderful idea. It is absolutely great. I really want to know how you get the advertisers and the venues to cooperate to be able to achieve this?
I would be very thankful if you would care to discuss this matter with me briefly.
My e-mail adress is groovemonk@mailcity.com
Please spare a few minutes for this.

Many thanks,
Ugur

Great idea! But what is there to prevent the advertiser from contacting the venue later on on doing the deal themselves, or vice versa?

Also, what about media buyers/planners? Once they hear about this or buy from you once, wont they be able to do all this themselves since they are in teh industry?

The only issue I see with this is that it is too easy to setup, so lot of competitors would start the same thing soon after you do?

Colin;
I am attorney who represents several establishments that hold liquor licenses in Boston and am interested in connecting with potential advertisers. Please contact me if you are aware of any serious interest in this market.
Thanks,
Tim
