Book publisher for kids

Media & Publishing Published on 3 June 2008 in Media & Publishing

We've already written about companies that serve as book publishers for the masses, and now Tikatok has launched into beta a new service that brings the same opportunity to kids.

Tikatok is an online community any child can use to write and illustrate stories, share them with friends and family, and even print them out as real paperback and hardcover books. Children can create a book free-form, or they can use the site's "StorySpark" templates to help them get started. Words and drawings are easily saved with a book editor that opens right on the site, requiring no extra software to download or install. Children can drag and drop text screens, write their ideas, change fonts and colours, and insert and delete pages at will. They can also easily add their own original artwork by drawing their pictures and scanning and uploading them, or by mailing them into Tikatok. Using the site's Friends feature, children can invite other friends through an email link to join the Tikatok network. They can also invite others to read their books, join and post their books to Book Clubs on the site, and participate in discussion threads with one another. Security and privacy on the site are stringent, as one might expect. Using Tikatok is free; printed copies of books can be purchased in hardcover or paperback for about USD 20 each.

As the youngest members of Generation C, today's kids are sure to be prolific producers of content. Anything that helps them do that while enabling their parents, grandparents and others to preserve their work for posterity is bound to be met with a warm reception. One to roll out in localized versions for doting families around the world! (Related: Archiving children's drawingsGravanity books for kids.)

Comments on this idea:

This is a great idea- and a wonderful way to bring a child's creative thoughts to life!

My book isn't done yet but I'm looking for anyone who will publish for me. I am eleven years old and my book is about a princess named Castella who is captured when an army invades her kingdom aware there is no turning back she decides to live her dream of being a warrior during the process her friends, Annie and Laciella, are sucked into the training of happy-go-lucky Elijah and sensible Mordichi. Soon a spiteful fairy named Nellie comes into Castella's life, soon after comes Luke, Peter, and their fairy, Flame Flier. Castella finds herself falling for Peter as does Laciella for Luke. Annie is head over tail for "foxy" Samuel (Mordichi's son) not to mention Laciella's fairy, Halil, and Flame Flier's fight for Nellie!
But, caught up in their young love, will they be able to save the new home they've come to love?

In my (German) blogging community I detected a group of students flocking together on a project whether learning to use a computer might be useful/fun/of educational impact on children in their early classes etc. etc.
Just now I accidentally found out about your project enhancing creativity, self esteem and much more in that age group and I'm enthusiastic about it's pedagogic possibilities.
With your permission I'll inform those hesitating students about your Beta hoping their lecturer is able to convince them.

This is commendable as it will make the seemingly lost art of story writing come back as quickly as possible.

Hi my name is Matt Nixon, I am 12 years old and am trying to write a novel. I have been searching the web lately, only to find nothing. Today I came across your site. Do you think you could publish my book, that is when I am finished

After reading other comments posted I decided that I too will share the plot of my story. My story is about soccer and wrestling, my two favorite sports. The children's book is named The First Season. The main character is 12 years old, just like me. He is also very, very small and gets picked on during the story. In real life I am very small (I,m only 4'5''!) Although I am small I don;t get picked on because in Hopkinton I have earned respect. Respect from everyone around me. In the novel he comes between a tough choice of choosing wrestling or soccer. What do you think of my book and I?

My name I will not give out or my age but I am a younger person. I want to be safe. I have written a book on the last unicorn. I started it when I was fairly young. I can not find a publisher. Please help.
