Brain-controlled device helps concentration

Sport & Fitness

New headset is clinically proven to improve focus, calmness and self-control.

The NeuroPlus is a headset that, when combined with one of the series of gaming apps for Apple and Android smartphones or tablets, helps the user improve their ability to concentrate. This could be especially effective for people suffering from attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

While users play the game, the headset will help them keep focus and concentrate by measuring brainwaves using electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors to detect the electrical activity in the brain. The device uses unique neurofeedback technology and can distinguish between whether users are distracted or focused.

A recent study of 60 children with ADHD between the ages of 8 and 13 show that the children who used the device had improved behaviour across the board. It’s hoped that younger people lacking concentration will enjoy playing the games. One example of how the device works is in the flying game, Axon. The player controls a dragon by remaining focused on it – the stronger the focus, the faster the dragon will fly. As the NeuroPlus can also measure movement and muscle tension, it will penalize players if they’re too tense or fidget.

NeuroPlus Inc recently finished a round of Kickstart crowdfunding, where it easily overtook its initial goal of USD 100,000, and gathered around 500 backers.

Another example of gaming technology being used to help people with a disability is a virtual reality game that can potentially spot the early signs of dementia. How could gaming be further employed to help dealing with common disorders?
