The pace of innovations driving the development of electric vehicles has increased rapidly. Recent e-vehicle innovations include a scheme to sell electric power from cars back to the grid and robotic EV charging stations. But until now innovations aimed at the motorcycle market were few and far between. This may be about to change. American motorcycle company Curtiss Motorcycles has introduced a prototype all-electric motorcycle, called Zeus. The Zeus has an estimated output of around 170 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque. This makes it one of the most powerful e-bikes ever. Moreover, to achieve this power, the Zeus uses what Curtiss called e-twin technology. The company uses two electric motors to drive a single shaft.

The Zeus prototype is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack which powers two high-output electric motors driving a common output shaft. In addition to the dual motors, the Zeus also sports an innovative design, which gives the bike a functional, futuristic appearance. Without the need for a fuel tank, the bike presents a slim profile. The seat is sleek and ends well before the rear wheel, which uses a mono-shock suspension. The bulk of the bike’s mass is towards the bottom, to aid in balance.

According to Curtiss, the Zeus is just the first of many all-electric motorcycles the company plans to introduce over the next few years. The prototype is still being developed, so the company have not released detailed technical specifications or price. However, Curtiss’ last motorcycle, a limited-edition gasoline-powered v-twin called the Warhawk, sold for 105,000 USD, so it would be fair to say that the Zeus will probably not be a budget option. The Warhawk also represented the last Curtiss bike to be gasoline-powered. From now on, all Curtiss motorcycles will be electric. Do e-bikes represent the future of motorcycling?
