Any complex electronic device is essentially a collection of modules that each perform a particular task, which is why kits that make assembling circuits — such as Circuit Stickers, for example — are becoming popular for those without the knowledge to build them themselves. The latest iteration is Printoo, an Arduino-compatible set of prototyping modules that can be attached to any object to give it various smart capabilities.

Developed by Portugal-based Ynvisible, the system includes various ‘blocks’ ranging from batteries and wireless connectors to solar panels and sensors (there’s a full list here). Each module is thin and flexible, meaning it can be attached to almost any surface, and is powered through a ready-to-program Arduino microcontroller. Users can combine the modules in any way they like in order to prototype new products or create on-the-fly devices, although the Printoo website holds a library of projects — such as a solar-powered hovercraft model, a Bluetooth fan, and a poster that allows electronic voting — complete with a list of modules needed and the code to use. Printoo is currently being crowdfunded through a Kickstarter campaign which has 48 hours left to go. A starter kit featuring the Arduino core, a battery and two flexible displays is available for USD 45, with more complex packages priced at up to USD 550. Although designed for adults, could a similar system be simplified further to serve as an educational tool?
